SOMERS POINT, NJ — Shore Medical Center in Somers Point recently announced that the Kyle Evans Memorial Golf Outing has reached a total of $100,000 in donations over the past five years.

The latest contribution of $20,000 follows the organization’s 2025 golf tournament.

OAR13, the nonprofit behind the effort, focuses on addressing the opioid epidemic and supporting new treatment methods within the community. Funds raised through the annual event assist the hospital in reducing opioid use and expanding non-opioid pain management strategies.

These initiatives have produced measurable results, including a 15.5 percent decrease in opioid doses administered to hospitalized patients from 2024 to 2025.

Additionally, the hospital reported a 10 percent decrease in intravenous opioid doses during the same period.

David Hughes, chief executive officer and president of Shore Medical Center, noted the importance of the partnership.

“Thanks to everyone who organized and supported the Kyle Evans Memorial Golf Outing, this partnership with OAR13 has now generated $100,000 to assist our efforts to address the opioid epidemic in our community,” Hughes said. “The continued reductions highlight the impact of sustained clinical initiatives designed to strengthen opioid stewardship, while ensuring patients continue to receive safe and effective pain management.”

David Beyel, Jr. presented the check to hospital leadership on February 26. Other members of OAR13 include Nick Canderan, Maggie Davis, Jason Dugan, Nikki Patrizzi, and Ryan Scully.

“On behalf of OAR13, we would like to thank all of our sponsors, players, families and friends that continue to support us each year,” said Ryan Scully. “What started out as an idea and an excuse to come together to remember our friend Kyle has now turned into $100k in donations to the hospital and 7 college scholarships for student-athletes. We
hope to continue to make a meaningful impact in the community.”

The hospital utilizes various programs to manage pain, including a pharmacy-driven protocol that prioritizes oral opioids over intravenous administration to reduce risks like respiratory depression.

The Emergency Department has also expanded non-opioid order sets to decrease unnecessary use. The hospital also collaborates with Legacy Treatment Centers to provide detox services and transition patients to outpatient care.

Other security measures at the facility include AI software to monitor controlled substances, upgraded storage systems, and the distribution of naloxone discharge kits.

The Kyle Evans Memorial Golf Outing is scheduled to return to Harbor Pines Golf Club on Friday, April 24.

OAR13 stands for Opioid Addiction Recovery, with the 13 in honor of their friend Kyle Evans, who wore #13 as a star player on the Ocean City High School soccer team. In 2005, Evans led the Ocean City High School boys’ soccer team to an undefeated season – the only one in Cape-Atlantic League history. Evans passed away on Nov. 1, 2017, shortly after his 30th birthday. For more information, visit oar13.org
