Lynn Caterson is 2023 Woman of Distinction

On March 11, the Atlantic County Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) recognized longtime member, Lynn Caterson as their 2023 Woman of Distinction. A luncheon was held in her honor at the Carriage House in Galloway with over 85 guests in attendance.

Evelyn “Lynn” Caterson has enjoyed a long, successful career as an attorney in Atlantic County. She was the first Atlantic County female judge and first woman elected City Council President of Absecon. She has served as Assistant Prosecutor of Atlantic County, President of the Atlantic County Bar Association, and President of the Atlantic County League of Municipalities.

Caterson received her BA in Biology from The University of Pennsylvania in 1967 and graduated Rutgers School of Law in 1980, graduating Magna Cum Laude. After graduation, she opened a private practice specializing in non-profit law and began a long career of public service to the community.

Many Atlantic County leaders honored Lynn as they spoke of her accomplishments. John Risley, who represented the Atlantic County Board of Commissioners, recognized the many volunteer hours that Lynn has given to many social organizations in the community.

Risley remarked, “She has given so many hours of pro bono work to those in need. If you want something done, give it to Lynn.”

In addition to political leaders, Caterson received accolades from a number of faith leaders from the United Methodist Church, where she has been a member for many years. Bishop John Schol, representing the Greater New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, was grateful for her legal representation on behalf of the United Methodist Church.

“Some words that I associate with Lynn are persistent, passionate, fearless, rebel, caring, compassionate and faithful. If you are in court, you want Lynn on your side,” said Schol. “Lynn is a person who can grab people’s attention. She has given herself to people, God, community and the church.”

His words of gratitude were echoed by the Reverend Brian Roberts and fellow congregant of the Absecon United Methodist Church, Dr. Donald Dearborn.

The speakers were joined by local radio host, Anne Baker whose show “Talking with Anne” is broadcast locally on WOND. She also had words of admiration for Caterson saying, “You have given yourself over to a community as no one else has ever done.”

Hosting the luncheon were leaders from the Atlantic County Branch of AAUW. After her friend and lifetime AAUW member, Gail Zona spoke, the microphone was given to AAUW President Jackie Shelley-Tasoff. She welcomed the guests and reminded them of Caterson’s dedication to the organization, of which she has been a member for over 50 years.

“Where do you begin to talk about Lynn’s accomplishments when her resume is five pages long?” remarked Shelly-Tasoff, noting that Lynn’s sharp intellect and determination have helped so many women in South Jersey.

When it was her turn to speak, Caterson was quick to give credit to AAUW, whose mission is to advance gender equity for women and girls through research, education and advocacy.

“I would like to thank AAUW for making it all happen. It is my privilege and honor to be recognized today,” said Caterson as she was presented with a unique ceramic plate created by MudGirls Studio of Atlantic City. The platter bore Caterson’s favorite quote from South African leader, Nelson Mandela, which states, “I never lose. I either win, or I learn.”
