OCEAN CITY, NJ - A Pennsylvania man died Thursday after being rescued from the surf off the coast of the Jersey Shore, according to an NJ.com report.

The rescue took place around 12:20 p.m. at an unprotected beach near 12th Street after Ocean City Beach Patrol received reports of two individuals in distress in the water, the publication wrote.

Three lifeguards pulled two men to shore, including one man who was unresponsive, the publication added, noting that rescue crews immediately began providing CPR.

The unresponsive man, later identified as Shawn Reilly of Thornhurst, Pa., died at a local hospital, NJ.com reported.

Ocean City spokesman Doug Bergen told the publication that strong winds contributed to the rough surf on Thursday.

Friday is expected to see continued surf patterns, with the National Weather Service warning of high risk for dangerous rip currents along New Jersey and Delaware beaches.

The incident is the latest in nearly a dozen drownings reported across the shore this summer. Most of the deaths happened when people were swimming at unguarded beaches, Patch previously reported: 10 Drownings In A Month Prompts Calls For Change At NJ Beaches, Lakes
