The assault took place on the 8th Street Beach just before 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4. Police responded to the scene to assist the lifeguards who were dealing with several people who were intoxicated and causing a disturbance, the Ocean City Police Department said Wednesday morning.

When the officers arrived, they say the men were assaulting the lifeguards. They then attacked the police officers before two of them ran off to Gillian's Wonderland Pier on the 600 block of the Boardwalk, police said.
