Miles Schoedler Named Top Cape-Atlantic League Athlete of Year

Ocean City star runner wins the Flagship Award as the top senior in the Red Raiders' conference.

To be a distance runner at means to be compared to the great athletes from years past.

Miles Schoedler has no problem with that. It just means he is doing something right.

The Red Raiders senior can add yet another accomplishment others have achieved before him at Ocean City.

Schoedler was named the top senior in the Cape-Atlantic League at the Flagship Awards ceremony held at the Music Pier on the Ocean City Boardwalk.  The event was started by Prime Events.

"It feels great. I know looking back at previous winners I know (Ocean City High School alumni) Renee Tomlin is up there and John Richardson, too," said Schoedler, who will run at Georgetown University. "It's just another thing to be in the same conversation with those guys. It's just great. I'm happy to win it."

Schoedler didn't get to wrap up his career the way he wanted to, suffering an ankle injury in the Cape-Atlantic League championships.

He missed the NJISAA Group III South meet, and didn't get a chance to qualify for the State Group Championships or the Meet of Champions.

However, Schoedler, who is among the best runners in the nation, can still be pleased with his high school career.

"I'm glad I had such a great career here," Schoedler explained. "My goal for high school was to run and get in a great college. I accomplished that. Everything else is icing on the cake. I'm happy for everything I accomplished."

Holy Spirit's Sara Marakos, who excelled at basketball, soccer and track field, was named the top female athlete. Ocean City's Tom Ballezzi, who played basketball and baseball, was also nominated.

Holy Spirit's football team was awarded the Tony Surace Award as the area's top football team. It was also announced that St. Augustine Prep will be award the Ed Byrnes Award as the CAL school that won the most titles during the school year.
