"The winds have been out of the northwest all day, and fortunately that helped to get through this morning’s high tide. But I urge everybody to use caution and limit travel tonight and tomorrow. The storm is not over.
"Wind speeds will remain strong through the evening and will make driving hazardous. The forecast also anticipates a change in the wind direction by Saturday, and I expect the threat of street flooding to be much greater in the morning and evening tomorrow.
"The morning high tide comes at about 9 a.m. on the bay side at the Ninth Street Bridge, so residents should be prepared to find a safe spot for vehicles tonight. The roads closer to the beach are at higher elevation for parking, and they also offer the safest routes of travel. As I mentioned yesterday, Trinity United Methodist Church at 20 North Shore Road in Marmora has been kind enough to extend an invitation for Ocean City residents to use their parking lot.
"Merion Park experienced a power outage this afternoon. It’s a good reminder to fully charge mobile phones and devices, and to check batteries in flashlights.
"If we do get substantial flooding, please do not drive around barricades. It’s never a good idea to drive through flood waters – for your own safety and for the sake of your vehicle. But wakes from passing vehicles can swamp nearby properties and cause damage. With so much road construction in progress, there can be hazards hidden beneath flooded streets.
"As in all emergencies, I ask that you check in on your neighbors and make sure they are OK and their properties are secure. I will continue to provide updates and information as the forecast develops. Public Safety and Public Works crews will be on hand all weekend and prepared to respond.
"For Police & Fire Department emergencies, call 911. For non-emergencies, call 609-399-9111. More detailed information is available here."
