NJ Weather: Possible Nor'easter In Mother's Day Weekend Forecast

Moms across New Jersey could get an unwelcome visitor on Mother's Day weekend.

Moms across New Jersey could get an unwelcome visitor on Mother's Day weekend: a streaking, soaking possible nor'easter that could last from 12-18 hours.

A heavy, wind-driven rainstorm is in the forecast for all New Jersey on Saturday. The storm will not be the worst storm to ever hit the state, but it will form and move like a nor'easter, providing several inches of rain, wind gusts of up to 30 mph and possible flooding, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm also will likely lead to alerts from the National Weather Service, and areas near the ocean, rivers and streams could be susceptible to flooding. "Outdoor plans on Saturday will be likely be a disappointment," said Mitchell Gaines meteorologist.

The rain is expected to stop by Sunday morning, so most of Mother's Day should be clear.

AccuWeather said the possible nor'easter will move from the South, where it's expected to start as a damaging wind and thunderstorm. By the time it gets to New Jersey, however, it's expected to be less powerful, Gaines said.

The fact that it is expected to move from the South, and along the coastline, would make it a nor'easter, he said. "The low pressure system that will be moving up the coast, and there will be quite a bit of rain," said Gaines said.

It's May, so this potential nor'easter won't come with snow. In fact, snow isn't a requirement for such a storm, the Weather Channel explains.

"Nor'easters are simply stronger areas of low pressure along the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S. featuring winds typically from the northeast. They're usually strongest from fall through early spring, but can happen any time of the year," according to the Weather Channel.

Temperatures will be in the 50s.
