Ocean City Girl, Pennsylvania Boy Win Bikes At Surf Fishing Tournament

The 42nd annual boys and girls surf fishing tournament was held on Saturday at the Ocean City-Longport Bridge.

OCEAN CITY, NJ — An Ocean City girl and a boy from Pennsylvania went home with new Huffy Cruiser bikes after each landed the largest fish during the Ocean City Fishing Club’s 42nd annual boys and girls surf fishing tournament on Saturday, Aug. 19.

Caroline Roman, 10, captured a 16-inch flounder to win the girls division. Things were a little less clear on the boys side. Several boys were tied for the largest fish, including Caroline’s brother, 11-year-old Charlie. Their names were placed in a bowl. Caroline Roman was asked to reach into it without looking and draw a name.

The name she drew belonged to Gareth DiPaolo, of Bethlehem, PA, won his bike with a 15-inch flounder.

All was not lost for Charlie Roman; he had already received a trophy and a new rod and reel by catching the most fish in his age group.

They were among 75 young people between the ages of 8 and 16 who caught a total of 50 fish
during the two-hour tournament on the beach by the Ocean City-Longport Bridge.

The bicycles were donated by the Miller family in memory of former tournament chairman and
club trustee Ralph Miller and his wife, Marion. Last October, Mr. Miller died at age 78, some nine
months after his wife’s death.

This year’s tournament was under the supervision of Ed Hoban, of Ocean City, assisted by his
wife, Marianne. Margaret Feil, of Ocean View, was in charge of registration and compiling the
tournament results. Fishing Club members were on the beach to record all catches and offer
advice.

Prizes for the most fish and the largest fish in different age and gender groups included rods
and reels, back packs, gift certificates, and sports equipment. The prizes were possible due to donations from more than 35 area businesses and organizations. The event is co-sponsored by the Ocean City Department of Recreation.
