Ocean City Girls Capture Title At Boardwalk Basketball Classic

The girls remained undefeated on the season, while the boys fell to Millville in the final of their bracket.

WILDWOOD, NJ — The Ocean City High School girls basketball team brought a trophy home with them from the Boardwalk Basketball Classic in Wildwood, while the boys came up just short in a clash with one of the better teams in South Jersey.

Ocean City defeated Methacton (PA), 46-40, in the GWITDA championship game Wednesday night. Danielle Donoghue helped pave the path to the championship with 18 points, five rebounds and two assists. Tori Rolls and Emma Finnegan each had eight points in the win, and Kilie Wyers and Michaela Baker rounded out the scoring with six points each.

Wyers gave Ocean City the lead for good when she hit a three point shot with two minutes, nine seconds left in the third quarter. Donoghue had the assist on the play, which made the score 31-30. The contest was a back-and-forth affair with Ocean City holding a 24-23 halftime lead.

Ocean City advanced to the tournament final with a 56-33 win over Hatboro Horsham of Pennsylvania in the opening game of the tournament on Tuesday. Finnegan lead the charge in that one with 15 points, three rebounds and two assists. Donoghue had 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists, and Wyers had 10 points, four rebounds and four assists in the win.

Following the two days of action, Ocean City remains undefeated at 6-0. The Red Raiders return to the court on Jan. 3 when they host Absegami, 6 p.m.

The Ocean City boys fell to Millville, 66-61, in the final of the Ray Martin Memorial Bracket Wednesday night. Luke Varallo lead the Red Raiders with 21 points, four rebounds and three assists, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Thunderbolts, who improved to 5-1 this season. Donovon Graham had 16 points, two rebounds and four assists. Issac Robertson had 10 points, four rebounds and two assists.

Millville’s Rynell Lawrence lead his team to the title with a double-double — 26 points and 19 rebounds — to go with three assists. To view the full box score, visit bbclassic.com.

Ocean City advanced to the final with a 61-45 win over Conrad Sciences of Delaware on Tuesday. Jacob McQuarrie lead the way in that one with 19 points, two rebounds and an assist. Robertson had 14 points, three rebounds and an assist in the win. Varallo had 14 points, three rebounds and an assist.

Wednesday night’s game was Ocean City’s third in this year’s Boardwalk Classic. On Saturday, the Red Raiders defeated Burlington City, 56-50, in a Crest Savings Bank Battle of the Boards showcase game.
In that one, Graham had 13 points, four rebounds and five assists for the Red Raiders. Robertson had 13 points and five rebounds, and Varallo had 13 points, one rebound and one assist.

Ocean City is 4-2 this season, and returns to the court on Jan. 3 when it visits Absegami, 7 p.m.

The Boardwalk Basketball Classic is a six-day tournament that raises college scholarship money for graduating seniors for the two high schools that host the tournament, Wildwood and Wildwood Catholic.

The largest high school co-ed basketball tournament in the country has raised over $300,000 in scholarship money since its inception in 1998.
