Ocean City High School Above Average in School Performance Reports

Ocean City High School prepares students for college and post-secondary schools better than schools across the state and comparable schools, according to the School Performance Reports for the 2013-14 school year, recently released by the New Jersey Department of Education.

This is the third year the Department has issued its School Performance Reports that provide comprehensive data on school performance.

The detailed report, which can be viewed by clicking here, measures how schools fared in meeting specific goals, as well as how the school performed against other schools in the state and its peer group.

Peer schools are schools that have similar grade levels and students with similar demographic characteristics, such as the percentage of students qualifying for Free/Reduced Lunch, Limited English Proficiency programs or Special Education programs.

South Jersey schools included in Ocean City’s peer group include Cinnaminson, Lenape, Seneca, Cherry Hill East, Haddon Heights, Clearview, Pitman and Washington Township.

Schools are ranked according to the following categories:

Very high: equal to or greater than the 80th percentile;

High: Between 60 and 79.9;

Average: Between 40 and 59.9;

Lagging: Between 20 and 39.9;

Significantly lagging: 19.9 or lower.

Ocean City was either high or average in each of the comparison categories.

Ocean City High School’s college and career readiness is high when compared to schools across the state, and when compared to its peers.

College and career readiness measures student participation in the SAT, ACT or PSAT and college AP or IB courses in English, math, social studies and science.

It meets 60 percent of its goals, outperforming 61 percent of statewide schools and 62 percent of peer schools.

Specifically, 49 percent of students scored above 1550 on the SAT

Its graduation and post-secondary performance is also high when compared to schools across the state and its peers.

This measures the rate at which students who begin high school four years earlier graduate within four years, and the rate at which students drop out of school.

It meets 100 percent of its targets, outperforming 63 percent of the state and 67 percent of its peers.

Its academic performance is about average when compared against the other schools in the state and its peers.

Academic Achievement measures the content knowledge students have in language arts literacy and math, including proficiency rates on both the Language Arts Literacy and Math sections of the New Jersey High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA).

It meets 88 percent of its targets, outperforming 59 percent of schools statewide and 41 percent of its peers.

Specifically, the school scored 100 percent in HSPA Language Arts and Proficiency, 75 percent in HSPA Math Proficiency, and met all but one of its targets for the No Child Left Behind waiver.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) was included in the reports for the first time this year.

CTE provides students with opportunities to attain academic, technical and professional skills that are essential for success in 21st Century careers. Through authentic learning experiences, informed by standards and expectations of business and industry, CTE programs enhance students’ career readiness and options for the future.

A total of 0.3 percent of Ocean City High School students participated, compared to a state average of 19.2 percent.

The overall graduation rate was 95 percent, with a dropout rate of 0.3 percent.

The student suspension rate was 5.3 percent, and there were no expulsions.

The School Performance Reports were created collaboratively with the input of members of the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA), New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association (NJPSA), the New Jersey Association of School Administrators (NJASA), the New Jersey School Boards Association (NJSBA), and the New Jersey Parent Teacher Association (NJPTA).
