The players will be wearing pink socks and the field will have pink ribbons painted on it along some of the yard lines and numbers.

Mike Lenhardt, General Supervisor of Grounds for the City of Ocean City began the tradition of painting the field pink in 2010.

Lenhardt was honoring his late wife, Gina, who passed away in 2003 from metastasized breast cancer.

The Red Raider Football Association is reaching out to all the fall sports teams, cheerleaders and the band in an effort to honor any family members of the student athletes who have fought or are currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

The plan is to allow the family member and their student to serve as honorary captains for the game.

The socks that will be worn by the players, as well as t-shirts for the students and their families were funded by donations from Atlantic Medical Imaging, Monihan Realty, Porter Performance, The Nathan Family, The Shallcross/McCulley Family, Ocean City Magazine and Upper Level Fitness.

The Association has adopted the motto, “Fighting breast cancer takes a team and we are happy our teams have joined the fight!”
