Ocean City High School Graduates 347 Students

The Class of 2011 graduated Thursday in a ceremony "just steps from the Atlantic," as John Krutsick put it in his valedictorian address.

The outdoor commencement took place at the high school's Carey Stadium, adjacent to the beach and boardwalk, and honored 347 graduating seniors.

Members of the Class of 1961, which graduated 50 years ago, were recognized during the ceremony, but the highlights were the three student speeches.

John Huff was chosen as graduation speaker in a competition (though he's No. 8 in the class). Huff used a theme from Rabbi Hyman Schachtel that "happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have." 

"No law says we have to measure happiness in dollars and cents," Huff said.

He went on to say that it's a "moral duty to work toward improving others' well-being," and concluded with a request to "find joy in graciousness and subtlety."

Salutatorian Kristy Northrup pointed to a series remarkable accomplishments by famous Americans at all stages of their lives (and to an accomplishment of her own: learning to ride a bike ... at age 17), and told her classmates, "It's never too late to have THAT moment."

"It's never too late to do something special," she said.

Krutsick used time as a theme in his address. He noted that Superintendent Kathleen Taylor told the class as incoming freshmen that the next 2.1 million minutes "will be the shortest of your lives."

And while he noted that his class often wished time to pass more quickly, "Time will allow us to grow into what we truly desire to be," he said.

He said the class would have to leave "the Ocean City bubble," a world of "Mack and Manco's, Kessel's and, of course Wawa."

And he said: "Wherever we may go, our home will always be here at Ocean City High School."
