Ocean City Library Celebrates Black History Month With Series Of Events In February

The celebration begins with the African American Read-In on Feb. 2.

OCEAN CITY, NJ β€” The Ocean City Free Public Library will present a series of events in celebration of Black History Month.

It all begins on Thursday, Feb. 2, with the National African American Read-In. This event will include:
  • a special story time featuring African American authors and artists (10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.);
  • black historians presented by the Ocean City Historical Museum (1 p.m. to 2 p.m.); and
  • selected readings and open mic (6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.).

The celebration continues on Friday, Feb. 17, 6 p.m. with a film screening of β€œThe Jackie Robinson Story.”

The library will wrap up the month-long celebration on Monday, Feb. 27, with a performance by the Bi-Okoto Drum and Dance Theatre, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m..

All programs are free and open to the public. The library is located at 17th Street and Simpson Avenue.
Black History Month began as Black History Week, a celebration of the contributions of African Americans nationwide. Kent State University first celebrated Black History month in 1970, and it became a national event as part of America’s bicentennial celebration in 1976.
