Ocean City Nor'easters Pick Up First Playoff Win Since 2013

The men's soccer team advanced to the conference semifinals this weekend.

Ocean City, NJ -- The Ocean City Nor’easters men’s soccer team scored two goals in two minutes to pick up their first playoff win since 2013 Tuesday night.

The Nor’easters defeated GPS Portland Phoenix, 3-1, in the first round of the PDL Eastern Conference playoffs at the University of New England.

Chevaughn "Chevy" Walsh (Jefferson / Spanish Town, Jamaica) was involved in the match’s first two goals.
He put Ocean City on the board in the match’s 14th minute off an assist from Oscar Umar (Villanova / Accra, Ghana).

Seconds later, Walsh put in a perfect cross that Nathan Regis (Pfieffer / Arima, Trinidad & Tobago) headed home with ease.

Mutaya Mwape (UConn / Lusaka, Zambia) sealed the win with a curling shot into the far corner late in the game, after a Portland player was ejected with a straight red card in the 80th minute. Martim Galvao (Pfieffer / Lisbon, Portugal) assisted the goal.

Fletcher Kern scored the lone goal for Portland, on a penalty kick in the 67th minute.

The Nor'easters dealt with a heavy attack in the final stages of the game. Goalkeeper Mike Kirk (La Salle / Mechanicsburg, PA) and his back four defenders, Fraser Colmer (Radford / Southampton, England), Daniel Nimmo(Campbellsville / Lithigow, Scotland), Andre Morrison(Hartford / Clarendon, Jamaica), and Ryan Howe (Loyola Chicago / Rockford, IL), were able to stave off several dangerous chances.

Ocean City will now face the Eastern Conference’s top team, the Charlotte Eagles, in the conference semifinals on Saturday, 5:30 p.m. at Reading United.

United will host the Carolina Dynamo in the other semifinal.
