Ocean City Residents Should Prepare For Possible Flooding, Officials Warn

A flash flood watch has been issued for Ocean City.

OCEAN CITY, NJ — The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for Ocean City from noon until midnight on Monday, Aug. 7. Ocean City doesn’t experience flash flooding because of its low elevation, city officials said in a statement Monday morning.

However, if the heaviest rain coincides with high tide, there could be street flooding. A full-moon high tide is set for the bay side of Ocean City (at the Ninth Street Bridge) at 9:01 p.m.

The forecast calls for between 1 and 4 inches of rain on Monday, with higher amounts possible. City officials are advising residents to move their cars from areas that typically experience tidal flooding, including the corridor along Haven and Simpson avenues.

Roads closer to the beach, including Central and Wesley avenues, are typically at higher elevation. These roads also offer the safest route of travel along the island.

Parking will be available at the Trinity United Methodist Church at 20 North Shore Road in Marmora. Anyone looking to take advantage of this service should first read this letter from Trinity.

Drivers are reminded never to drive through flooded waters or around barricades. Ocean City crews are out clearing storm drains in advance of possible flooding. Residents should also make sure inlets near their home are clear of debris.

Conditions are expected to improve on Tuesday. For police and fire emergencies, call 911. For non-emergencies, call 609-399-9111.
