OCEAN CITY, NJ — The City will seek a replacement for Antwan McClellan after all. City Council will seek a replacement to finish the former councilman's term.

McClellan represented Ocean City's Second Ward. He was recently elected to New Jersey's state assembly, leaving a vacancy for his council position.

The term for the council seat ends July 1. Applicants must be full-time residents of the city's Second Ward — the south side of 4th Street to the north side of 12th Street.

The application deadline is 4 p.m. Wednesday. Candidates should prepare for private interviews Feb. 13 with City Council. Citizens can apply online or pick up an application at the Clerk's Office in City Hall.

McClellan and Council President Peter Madden told The Press of Atlantic City that City Council was likely to leave the seat vacant until after the upcoming election. The appointment process can take months, and McClellan's term was set to end soon anyway.

But it appears the City changed course. Mayor Jay Gillian announced Friday in his weekly address that officials will seek a replacement for the remainder of McClellan's term.

The election cycle for all four ward positions is also approaching. Candidates have until March 9 to file petitions with the city clerk and get on the May ballot. New terms will begin July 1.

City Council includes four ward representatives and three at-large positions.

McClellan served Ocean City's Second Ward on City Council since 2012. He was elected Nov. 5 to represent the 1st District on the New Jersey General Assembly.
