Ocean City: Tyler Onesty Benefit Helps Students Help Others

The second Tyler Jay Onesty Memorial Scholarship Fund Benefit takes place Sunday at Golden Galleon Mini Golf.

OCEAN CITY, N.J. — Mini golf was one of Tyler Onesty's favorite activities. Onesty, of Ocean City, died March 2017 at 22 of a heroin overdose. But a scholarship fund in his name will help others save lives, and it will involve one of his pastimes.

The second Tyler Jay Onesty Memorial Scholarship Fund Benefit takes place 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Pirates of the Golden Galleon Golf (1124 Boardwalk). All proceeds will provide scholarships to current and future Ocean City High School students.

The scholarship can help the following students:

  • those affected by addiction and are furthering their education in some way
  • those choosing to start a career in addiction services, mental health services or the medical field
  • those who provide ideas on how to combat the drug epidemic in schools and communities

Scholarship recipients can attend a two- or four-year college or trade school. Money raised will also help scholarship local young adults in the Cape May and Atlantic County area in need of detox, rehab and sober living services, and/or provide individual or family counseling options. Funds will also help in providing transportation to detox or rehab facilities when needed.

Tyler's mother, Sally Onesty, received Ocean City's Martin Luther King Award in January for her work in saving lives and raising awareness about addiction.
