OCHS Roundup: Field Hockey Dominates, Soccer Teams Winning

A weekly glimpse at how Ocean City High School varsity teams are faring.

No surprises here.

The Ocean City High School field hockey team looks like the cream of the crop in the Cape-Atlantic League.

The Red Raiders, the defending Group III South champions, are 4-0, dismantling the competition in every game. The closest games were a pair of 5-1 victories over Mainland and Millville.

Ocean City has outscored its opponents 28-5 in the young season.

“Every single day, whether in practice or games, we want to give 100 percent and be relentless,” Ocean City coach Cory Terry said. “So far, we have done that.”

Most of these games have been over at halftime, with only Mainland staying within two goals after the first half.

The Red Raiders are doing it with a balanced attack—as eight different players have registered goals so far this season.

Shannon Lawson leads all Red Raiders with eight goals. Ali Stever has six, and Jacquie Fenton has added five.

Coming off a hat trick on Sept. 19, Liz Cruz has four, and Leah Davies found the back of the cage twice. Casey Hana, Julie Campbell and Abby Lyons have also scored.

“We have a lot of players on the team capable of scoring out on the field even in the defensive and midfield lines, and we need that to be successful,” Terry said. “We are all hungry to reach our goals. They are all selfless players who give up the ball to someone else. It’s that balance in the end that makes you successful.”

BOYS' SOCCER: THIS IS MORE LIKE IT

The Ocean City boys' soccer players say they feel the urgency to restore the proud tradition of the program and have backed that up with their play early this season.

The Red Raiders opened the year with a pair of shutouts over Vineland and Oakcrest.

Ocean City then lost 1-0 to a quality St. Augustine Prep team, which needed overtime to win the game. But the Red Raiders believe they outplayed their opponents for most of the game.

My guys played well against St. Augustine,” Red Raiders coach Aaron Bogushefsky said. “We got unlucky in the end; they sprinkled one in. We were the aggressors for most of the game. We had plenty of opportunities. We just couldn’t put it in.

“I was totally pleased with the effort last Friday, but the game didn’t go in our favor. They scored in the 99th minute of a 100-minute game. We were trying for the win, and we just got caught up too far. They ran the ball back up the other end and scored. I was proud of our kids that game.”

Max Beradis scored two goals in each of the first two games, and Andrew Kimball and Derrick Brewer each have two goals this season. Zack Sakena also has a goal.

GIRLS' SOCCER: QUALITY START

The Ocean City girls' soccer team is 2-1 this season with a pair of shutouts.

The Red Raiders opened the season with a 2-0 win over Vineland, as Ashley Edgell and Nicole Barbieri scored goals. Keeper Lauren Freas made seven saves to record the shutout.

Freas backed her performance with another seven-save day in a 1-0 win over West Deptford. Edgell also tallied another goal.
