Oliver North To Speak At Ocean City Tabernacle Sunday
He will speak at the Tabernacle Sunday morning. A group of residents has planned a protest.

OCEAN CITY, NJ — Incoming NRA President Oliver North will speak at the Ocean City Tabernacle this weekend. North will speak at the Tabernacle, located at 550 Wesley Avenue, on Sunday, July 8. He will speak at 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
“Oliver North is a combat decorated U.S. Marine, a No. 1 best-selling author, the founder of a small business, an inventor with three U.S. patents, a syndicated columnist, and the host of ‘War Stories’ on Fox News Channel,” the Tabernacle said in its post announcing the event. “He was involved in planning the rescue of 804 medical students on the island of Grenada and played a major role in the daring capture of the terrorists who hijacked the cruise ship Achille Lauro. President Ronald Reagan described North as ‘an American hero.”
North has authored 13 books, all of them New York Times best-sellers including “Heroes Proved,” “Counterfeit Lies” and “True Freedom.”

North was named president of the NRA in May. North, former deputy-director of the National Security Council, was forced to resign when he was implicated in the Iran-Contra affair, which involved selling weapons to Iran in exchange for American hostages, then funneling some money from those sales to support the Contra guerrillas in Nicaragua. He was convicted of three charges including obstructing Congress, illegally mutilating government documents and taking an illegal gratuity. All three were later overturned.
The 74-year-old North recently told ocnjdaily.com he intends to increase the NRA’s membership and clout ahead of November’s general elections, in which control of Congress will be at stake. It is his first visit to Ocean City since he was in the Navy 55 years ago.

A group of citizens is planning to protest North’s speaking engagement. They will gather at about 7:30 a.m. between 5th and 6th streets and Wesley and Asbury avenues. This protest isn’t sponsored by a specific group, organizers said in an email.
