Pair Of Events In Ocean City To Commemorate 9/11 Attacks

Events will be held at the Tabernacle and in front of the Ocean City Fire Department headquarters.

OCEAN CITY, NJ — Two ceremonies commemorating the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon will take place in Ocean City this weekend.

Ocean City will hold its annual “A Day to Remember” ceremony Monday night. The ceremony in front of the Ocean City Fire Department headquarters between Fifth Street and Sixth Street on Asbury Avenue begins at 7 p.m. All are encouraged to attend.

Becky Wynne will be the guest speaker. Her brother, Richard “Rick” Blood, an executive and volunteer fire marshal, died in the World Trade Center attacks. Their families visit Ocean City every summer in his honor. Their visits include a stop at a boardwalk bench that honors him, where they relish all the happy memories they shared in Ocean City.

The ceremony will include music, prayer and reflections on the memory of lives lost and on the community spirit that was renewed in the wake of the tragedy. The event includes the Striking of the Four Fives, a fire service tradition noting the death of a firefighter in the line of duty.

One day earlier, the Ocean City Tabernacle will host a separate service. Sujo John will serve as the keynote speaker at the ceremony, which will take place on Sunday, Sept. 10, 10:30 a.m. John and his wife, Mary, were among the last survivors of the attacks on the World Trade Center. He has since launched an international evangelical ministry and delivers a passionate and heartfelt message of faith and hope.
