Possible Shark Sighting Reported Off Jersey Shore Coast

Fishermen ventured miles off the coast to find something different. They succeeded: they may have come in contact with a white shark.

JERSEY SHORE — Fishermen went miles out into the water and may have come in contact with Jaws himself.

Pearson's Pursuit Inshore Fishing shared that on July 14, they went out to Sea Isle Ridge - about 15 miles off Townsend's Inlet and about 22 miles off Atlantic City - in search of "some bonito or mackerel action."

That didn't work out. Instead, fishermen wrote that they saw "the biggest shark of my life."

It was about 15 feet, the fishermen said. Photographs shared on their Facebook page show the dorsal fin of what appears to be a shark poking out of the water in a very "Jaws"-esque manner.

It's not clear if it was in fact a great white shark or something else. OCEARCH, an organization that tags and tracks white sharks, hasn't reported any near the Jersey coast in a while.

Fox 29 Philadelphia said it could have also been a basking shark, the second-largest living shark which, despite its intimidating appearance, is harmless to people.
