Public Hearing On Property Purchase Thursday In Ocean City

Ocean City Council meets Thursday night, Sept. 27, 7 p.m. at City Hall.

OCEAN CITY, NJ — There will be a public hearing and final vote concerning a proposed ordinance that would pave the way for Ocean City to possess the remainder of the car dealership lot across the street from the Ocean City Community Center Thursday night.

Ocean City Council will meet on Thursday, Sept. 27, 7 p.m. at City Hall, 861 Asbury Avenue.
The proposed ordinance would allow the city to claim by purchase or condemnation 109 16th Street (Block 1506 Lot 1), 1600 Haven Avenue (Block 1606 Lot 3) and 1640 Haven Avenue (Block 1606 Lot 5).

If approved, the city will be on track to own the entire lot following the $9 million purchase of 1601-43 Simpson Avenue, 1620 Haven Avenue, 1628-38 Haven Avenue and 1644-46 Haven Avenue — listed as Block 1606, Lots 2, 3.01, 4 and 6 on Sept. 13.

The first two properties under consideration are owned by Palmer Center LLC, according to a memo included in the agenda packet posted on the city’s website. The third is owned by the estate of Nicholas Palermo Sr.

“The administration is in the process of obtaining appraisals for each of the properties,” according to the memo. “Efforts will then be made to negotiate with the respective property owners for a purchase of the property. If those efforts are unsuccessful, the city may then proceed with condemnation in order to acquire the properties. City Council must approve a bond ordinance to fund the property’s purchase prior to the actual acquisition of any of the properties.”
