Reconstruction Phase Of Ocean City Boardwalk Project Set To Begin

The demolition of the Boardwalk between 10th and 12th streets is complete, according to Mayor Jay Gillian.

OCEAN CITY, NJ — The Boardwalk Reconstruction project is progressing and the Beach Replenishment Project could be finished by December, Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian said in his weekly address last week.

“Boardwalk demolition between 10th Street and 12th Street is complete, and Schiavone Construction is starting to drive pilings and place stringers for the new substructure,” Gillian said.

This phase began back in October, and video and a photo of the work taken in November and previously uploaded to Ocean City Patch by Steve Witkowski is attached to this post.

The goal of the overall project is to replace the boardwalk between Fifth Street and 12th Street. The project is expected to be complete by the end of March.

Fred M. Schiavone Construction, the contractor for three other phases of the project, has been awarded a $2.9 million contract to complete the work. Southern yellow pine is being used for the decking. Sections of decking are being built off-site.

The most recent round of work has resulted in a “rare glimpse” of what Ocean City may have looked like before a section of the boardwalk was built between the beach dunes and a row of storefronts back in 1928, Jacqueline L. Urgo wrote for philly.com. The modern day boardwalk was rebuilt following a fire in 1927. The original boardwalk was built in 1880.

Contractors have taken advantage of good weather to make progress on this project and beach replenishment work, Gillian said.

“Great Lakes Dredge and Dock has reached Fourth Street in its beach replenishment work between Seaspray Road and 12th Street,” Gillian said. “If they continue at this pace, work could be complete by Christmas.”
