Ocean City continues to recover after last week's storm that dumped more than 15 inches of snow on the island.

As of 9 p.m. Sunday night, a new loader and plow crew began another 12-hour shift to remove snow and and to salt the beaches, according to Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian. It was part of the round-the-clock cleanup that began on Wednesday, Jan 3.

“Over the past several days, we’ve employed three heavy-duty plow trucks, four medium-duty dump-plow trucks, 12 pickup plows, three loaders, a backhoe and a skid steer from the Public Works Department and contracted out to bring in another eight tri-axle dump trucks and another front-end loader to move an estimated 45,000 tons of snow,” Gillian said.

The schools, municipal court, Ocean City Aquatic and Fitness Center, Ocean City Free Public Library and City Hall were all open regular hours on Monday. Work continues to clear as much snow as possible from downtown sidewalks and on-street parking areas.

“With temperatures expected to rise above freezing for the first time in two weeks in the coming days, please be on the lookout for water flowing from burst pipes – particularly in properties that are unoccupied for the season. Call the non-emergency police line at 609-399-9111 to report any incidents as promptly as possible. They will dispatch the Ocean City Fire Department, which can cut off the water supply at the source and secure the property.

“I want to thank the entire Public Works team and Director Joe Berenato for an amazing and tireless job getting us all back on the road. And I want to thank everybody for their patience and for working together during this weather event. It’s not often that we get this much snow and this much cold at the same time.”
