Buttermilk The Climbing Beagle Charms The Internet With Feats

Buttermilk, an adorable beagle who can climb like -- dare we say it? -- a cat, won Internet fame. And the escape artist found a home.

WINDSOR, VA — Buttermilk, an adorable beagle who can climb like — dare we say it? — a cat, won Internet fans and fame recently. And she found a new home in part thanks to a viral video of the hound's determined effort to get out of a kennel at a Virginia animal shelter. Her feat of derring-do as she scaled the bars of a kennel probably explain how the escape artist came to be a stray in the first place.

The young beagle was curious and wanted to explore the Isle of Wight County Animal Shelter last month. Staff members caught the end of her climb, and a painful-sounding fall, on a cell phone video. Workers posted Buttermilk's adventure to the shelter's Facebook page, complete with the phrase "BUSTED" across the screen.

Since the video was posted Nov. 28, it was been shared roughly 2,500 times and been watched about 184,0000 times via Facebook.

"Whoever adopts this cutie is going to need to keep a regular eye on her! She may be tiny but she is MIGHTY and has super climbing powers," the shelter staff wrote on Facebook.

They noted that Buttermilk was not harmed in any way from her ill-fate climb and staffers gave her a prompt exam afterward her fall. She also was moved into a different style kennel to prevent her from continuous climbs and escapes.

Once the staffer walks up to her kennel after the tumble, a sheepish Buttermilk wags her tail as her caretaker croons to her, "What were you doing up there? Were you trying to escape? You silly girl, we don't do that."

Luckily, Buttermilk had an approved adoptive family lined up to take her home after she was spayed last week. And hopefully they have a very tall fence, and lots of walks planned to keep the curious hound from following its nose into more trouble.
