Several Volunteer Positions Available On Boards And Commissions In Ocean City

Ocean City, NJ -- The following volunteer opportunities are available on various Ocean City boards and commissions:
Aviation Advisory Board
Purpose: The board serves in an advisory capacity to the City Council and Administration in regard to the operation of the Ocean City Municipal Airport.
Membership: Seven total members. City Council appoints five members plus a Council Representative and the mayor.

Meetings: Meets on an as-needed basis.
Housing Authority
Purpose: The Housing Authority is responsible for the ownership and management of Public Housing in Ocean City in accordance with state and federal guidelines. The OCHA has as its mission to provide decent and affordable housing in a safe and secure living environment for low and moderate-income residents of Ocean City. This is an independent board.

Meetings: Third Tuesday of every other month, 7 p.m., Housing Authority (Bay View Manor, 635 West Avenue, or Pecks Beach Village, 204 Fourth Street).
Zoning Board
Purpose: In accordance with the New Jersey Municipal Land Use Law, the Zoning Board of Adjustment is responsible for:
1. Hearing appeals from decisions of an administrative official related to development applications.
2. Hearing applications for relief from provisions of the local zoning ordinance.
Membership: City Council appoints seven regular members and two alternate members. Regular member appointments are four-year terms, and alternate member appointments are two-year terms.
Meetings: Third and fourth Wednesday of every month, 7 p.m., City Hall, 861 Asbury Avenue.
Ocean City Free Public Library Board
Purpose: Governs and oversees the operations of the Ocean City Free Public Library in accordance with N.J.S.A 40:54-9.
Membership: Nine members consisting of seven local citizens plus the mayor and superintendent of schools or their designees. Citizen members are appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of City Council.
Meetings: Second Monday of the month, 4 p.m., Ocean City Free Public Library, 1735 Simpson Ave.
Shade Tree Committee
Purpose: The Shade Tree Committee is involved with the regulation, planting, planning and care of shade and ornamental trees and shrubbery on any public street, park or property in Ocean City.
Membership: The committee consists of seven members appointed by the mayor with the advice and consent of the city council. All appointments are for four-year terms.
Meetings: Fourth Wednesday of the month, 9 a.m., City Hall, 861 Asbury Avenue.
Utility Advisory Commission
Purpose: To interact and communicate with utility organizations including but not limited to those providing Ocean City with electric, gas, water, sewer and cable television, as well as municipal utility authorities, for the purposes of advising the city council of issues of public importance concerning rate schedules, service and other related subjects.
Membership: Nine members appointed by the city council to four-year terms.
Meetings: Third Wednesdays on the following dates, 9 a.m., City Hall, 861 Asbury Avenue: Jan. 18 (reorganization meeting), Feb. 15, April 19, June 21, Aug. 17, Oct. 18 (field trip).
Environmental Commission
Purpose:
- To protect, develop or promote use of natural resources, including water resources, located within territorial limits of the City of Ocean City.
- Conduct research into the use and possible use of open land areas of the City and may coordinate the activities of unofficial bodies organized for similar purposes, and may advertise, prepare, print, and distribute books, maps, charts, plans and pamphlets which in its judgment it deems necessary for its purpose;
- Keep an index of all open space areas, publicly or privately owned, including open marshland, swamps and other wetlands, in order to obtain information on the proper use of such area and may from time to time recommend to the City’s Planning Board plans and programs for inclusion in the Master Plan and the development and use of such areas;
- Under certain circumstances, review applications before the Planning Board and Zoning Board and provide input and recommendations to those Boards.
- To apply for applicable state grants.
Membership: The Environmental Commission consists of seven members, all of whom shall be appointed by the mayor and all of whom shall be residents of Ocean City. One of the members may also be a member of the Ocean City Planning Board. City council appoints two alternate members. Appointments for regular members are for three-year terms. Alternate member appointments are for two-year terms.
Meetings: Second Tuesday of the month, 6:30p.m., Senior Center, 1735 Simpson Avenue.
