Severe Weather Conference At The Ocean City Music Pier Sept. 7

OCEAN CITY, NJ — New Jersey was spared the major destruction of Hurricane Harvey, but the season for severe weather is not yet finished. In New Jersey, The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, but the height of hurricane and tropical storm activity in New Jersey is mid-August to late October.

With this in mind, local weather expert Dan Skeldon and Ocean City are teaming up to co-sponsor a free event that gives members of the public the chance to ask a panel of meteorologists and emergency managers about tropical storms, nor’easters and other weather-related issues.

The 2017 Cape-Atlantic Severe Weather Conference is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 7, at the Ocean City Music Pier, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Music Pier is located on the Boardwalk, between Eighth and Ninth streets. Anyone in South Jersey with an interest in the weather is invited to attend and participate.

The conference will open with presentation led by American Aerospace Technologies and SkyScape Industries that demonstrates how drones can assist in emergency management. The panel discussion will begin at 7 p.m.

Skeldon, who earned a stellar reputation for local forecasting in a career with NBC 40 and Longport Media, Ocean City Director of Emergency Management Frank Donato will moderate. The expert panel includes:

• Glenn “Hurricane” Schwartz, Philadelphia NBC10 meteorologist
• Joe Miketta, National Weather Service in Mount Holly meteorologist
• Jim Eberwine, retired National Weather Service meteorologist
• Tom Lamaine, former meteorologist and newscaster for KYW-TV CBS3
• John Miller, U.S. Senate Fellow working on National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) reauthorization
• David Yoel, CEO of American Aerospace Technologies, an industry leader in the use of unmanned aerial systems used in emergency management

The two-hour discussion will include brief presentations from the panelists on South Jersey weather and an open microphone for questions.

“The flow of conversation is up to you,” Skeldon said of the event. “It's your chance to ask questions of anyone on the panel, express concerns, and make suggestions as we all talk South Jersey weather and how to better prepare it, forecast it, and communicate that forecast and emergency information.”
