Sierra Club to Sponsor Saturday Bike Ride

The event serves as a rally in support of clean energy.

The Sierra Club invites the public to participate in a 15-mile bicycle ride on Saturday, April 28, to show support for clean energy.

The ride will start at 10 a.m. on the bay side of Ocean City at Tennessee Avenue — across the bay from the B.L. England Generating Station in Beesleys Point, a coal-fueled power plant. The ride will end at the Atlantic County Utilities Authority wind farm in Atlantic City.

B.L. England faces a Dec. 15 deadline (for one of its units) to 1) add pollution controls to the existing coal-burning facility, 2) repower using natural gas as fuel, or 3) to shut down the facility. Another unit faces a Dec. 15, 2013, deadline. B.L. England is , according to recent reports.

City Council in Ocean City will calling for the power plant to meet the deadlines without further extensions.

Saturday's "Roll Beyond Coal" ride is intended as a rally for wind power and clean energy sources. Organizers are asking for volunteers to help transport riders and bicycles from Atlantic City back to Ocean City.
