Somers Point Approves Ban On Single-Use Plastic Bags
The policy will have a 120-day grace period before it goes into effect.
SOMERS POINT, NJ — Somers Point approved a ban on single-use plastic bags. The ordinance changes the city's previous policy of charging a 5-cent plastic bag surcharge.
City Council voted 4-3 for the ban Sept. 12.
Retailers will have a 120-day grace period to use existing supplies before the ban goes into effect.

Somers Point joins towns such as Brigantine, Avalon and Stone Harbor on adopting plastic-bag bans.
Governor Phil Murphy vetoed a bill that would have resulted in a statewide fee on single-use plastic and paper bags. Murphy argued the bill didn't go far enough. A new proposal hasn't made it to his desk.
