Sports Q&A with OCHS Tennis Player Phil Adams

The Ocean City senior plays singles for the Red Raiders' tennis team.

Phil Adams had never played competitive tennis until he started walking the halls of Ocean City High School. But four years later, he is among the top players for the Red Raiders.

Ocean City Patch caught up with the senior to talk about tennis and life away from the courts.

"I started playing at a camp I went to during the summer (in Maryland). I started playing there. I liked it, and I picked it up."

What is your favorite part of tennis?

"Just learning new stuff, getting better and the people you meet."

When did you realize you could play at the varsity level?

"When people started to tell me I looked good, I had good form, and all the players around me were pretty good. They helped me get better."

What is your strength on the tennis court?

"I’m an all-around player. I don’t have a strong point."

Do you use anything you learned from tennis in everyday life?

"Tennis is a mind game. A couple years ago, I was a hothead. I definitely would get frustrated. Playing over the years taught me to calm down. I have to think twice about shots, and I think twice about everything outside of this. I think about things before my actions."

Do you listen to music before you play?

"I do listen to some, but I don’t have a favorite song. If it’s good, I will just crank it up."

Do you have any college plans?

"I’m going to (Atlantic Cape Community College), and then transferring out somewhere.

What is your favorite activity?

"I like hanging with friends a lot and playing basketball. It sounds dumb, but I only play tennis out here. I’m not big on playing away from here, even though I should."
