Waterspout Came Ashore In Cape May County, NWS Says

CAPE MAY POINT, NJ — A waterspout formed and briefly came ashore during severe storms Tuesday night, officials said.

Videos and photos captured the waterspout, which is a tornado that forms over water.

It was reported at 6:15 p.m. and traveled at a peak of 60 to 70 mph, according to the National Weather Service. The path width was 30 yards and the path length was 0.255 miles.

"A waterspout was witnessed going on shore the beach at Cape May point," the National Weather Service said. "A narrow path of tree damage was noted along Lincoln Avenue, Yale Avenue, and near the intersection of Oxford Ave and West Lake Drive. At least one witness saw the funnel cloud proceed into Lake Lily, but no other damage was noted."
