Woman Punched By Police On NJ Beach Indicted For Assault

Emily Weinman was indicted by a grand jury in an incident in which she was punched by police officers on a beach in Wildwood.

A woman who was punched by police officers while she was on a beach in Wildwood Memorial Day weekend has been indicted on assault charges, the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office confirmed on Monday.

A new court date has not yet been set for Emily Weinman, who was also indicted on charges of resisting arrest, throwing bodily fluids and obstruction.

The prosecutor's office didn't elaborate on the charges. Her attorney had no comment when reached by Patch Monday afternoon.

A video of the officers punching Weinman emerged online after she refused to give the officers her name when they approached her about having alcohol on the beach. That video can be seen below.

Authorities previously said the officers wouldn't face charges related to the assault. After that announcement, she told CBS This Morning that that decision shows that the police think they can "get away with it."

Earlier this year, Weinman rejected a plea deal on those charges. She had been looking to enter a pretrial intervention program, but the prosecutor's office denied her access to the program.

In the days after the incident, Wildwood Commissioner of Public Safety Tony Leonetti told NBC10 that Weinman assaulted one of the officers by kicking him in the groin and then running away, which was not shown in the video and possibly happened before she was punched. Wildwood Police also say Weinman spat at one of the officers.

The graphic video horrified many, while many others also stood up to support the police. "You're about to get dropped," one of the officers told her just before police grabbed her, tussled with her and then punched her.

Weinman acknowledged that she gave police a "little attitude" when they approached her about alcohol on the beach, which she said was sealed.

Weinman, who was under 21 at the time, had gone to the beach with her daughter, her father and a friend when the incident occurred. She maintains that she's not a criminal and what she did wasn't a big issue.
