Work On Gas Main Renewal Project In Ocean City Starts Jan. 24

OCEAN CITY, NJ — Work will begin work on a natural gas main renewal project in Ocean City on Wednesday, Jan. 24, city officials announced this week. Work, to be performed by South Jersey Gas contractors is expected to be finished by May 1.
Work will begin near the intersection of Roosevelt Boulevard and Bay Avenue, and will continue up 34th Street. The right lane of inbound traffic will be closed during construction work.
Later stages of work will be along nearby stretches of Asbury Avenue, Central Avenue, Wesley Avenue, West Avenue, Simpson Avenue, Waterway Road, Sunnyside Court, Bayland Drive, Bay Avenue, 36th Street, 34th Street, 32nd Street, 31st Street, 30th Street, 29th Street, 28th Street, 27th Street, 24th Street, 23rd Street and 22nd Street.

The work could include road closings and detours. Streets that will be impacted are highlighted in yellow in the map below. The goal of the project is to replace aging bare steel mains with more durable plastic pipe, providing significant safety and reliability benefits for customers, according to South Jersey Gas.
Excavations will be required at the gas main, located in the street, according to a fact sheet about the project provided by officials. If the service line running up to a property needs to be replaced, there may also be excavation work at the service line. All excavations will be restored on a daily basis, according to the gas company.

The gas company may have to dig on private property for the project. In most cases, a temporary repair will be made until the final restoration occurs. Openings in concrete may be temporarily patched with asphalt until final restoration with concrete occurs.

South Jersey Gas or its contractor will contact customers to gain access to properties with gas service to complete this work. Work will take place Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. There is a possibility that work will be performed some Saturdays in January and February from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Every effort will be made to restore natural gas service as quickly as possible. As part of this project, gas meters may need to be replaced, depending on their location, age and condition.
