On April 28, just before 10 p.m., the Paramus Police Department responded to a two-car crash in the southbound lanes of Route 17, near the exit for Ridgewood Avenue, prosecutors said.

Police determined that Perez had been speeding in a 2015 Audi and lost control while attempting to change lanes, causing him to crash into a Jeep.

Both drivers were taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries that officials at first thought were minor.

"Following the crash, however, and after hospitalization, it was determined that the driver of the Jeep sustained serious injuries," prosecutors noted.

Thus, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit was notified. The Fatal Accident Investigation Unit joined the investigation with detectives from the Paramus Police Department.

The investigation determined that Perez was trying to race another car when he crashed.

He was charged with second-degree aggravated assault, fourth-degree assault by auto, and motor vehicle offenses.

He was taken to the Bergen County Jail, made a first appearance in
Bergen County Superior Court, and was released to await further court action, prosecutors said.
