PARAMUS, NJ — Two people were charged with robbery on Wednesday after trying to steal from a Dollar Tree store in Bergen County and assaulting an employee, police say.
Sonya Schoenbrunn, 43, of Closter and Alan Edelstein, 60, of Hackensack were arrested in connection with the robbery at the Dollar Tree located in the Shoppes at IV in Paramus, police said.
Police said that around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, they responded to the store at 275 Route 4 West.
Police were told that the suspects were a white male wearing a gray shirt and black pants and a white female wearing a gray hat, black tank top, and black shorts. They fled east toward a Rolls-Royce dealership on foot, police said.
Police talked to the store manager, who "appeared disheveled and exhibited signs of having been involved in a physical altercation," police said.
The manager said she caught two people shoplifting $60 worth of health and beauty products.
When she tried to stop them, they allegedly grabbed her hair, bent her fingers, and grabbed her arm to force her out of the way, police said.
Police saw a laceration on the woman's left bicep.
Officer Jason Hrbek found the two suspects near Rutgers Place and Oxford Terrace in the River Edge. He arrested them without incident.
Schoenbrunn and Edelstein were each charged with second-degree robbery.
Schoenbrunn was taken to the Bergen County Jail to await her first court appearance, police said. Edelstein was released on his own recognizance.
