Borough Selling 'Katrina House'

The home once housed a family displaced by the 2005 storm.

The Borough is putting the "Katrina House" up for sale.

The house on Farview Avenue that once housed a family displaced by the hurricane is no longer in the  Borough's plans, Mayor Richard LaBarbiera said.

When the Borough purchased the house, the intent was to move human services into the building or expand the senior center parking lot onto the property. Instead, the home housed the Gonzalez family after Hurricane Katrina washed the New Orleans family out of their home.

The Borough scrapped its plans for the house after it was deemed that the cost to make the house compliant with the American Disabilities Act would be too high. The Borough currently pays to maintain the house and cut the grass.

While these costs are low, LaBarbiera said, they aren't worth it for a house the Borough isn't using. The Borough is accepting officers above $399,000 for the house.

"We're hopeful we can command more than that," LaBarbiera said.
