Former Paramus Catholic Guidance Counselor Sues School Over Alleged Same-Sex Marriage Firing

Kate Drumgoole, 33, is suing the school claiming she was fired after officials found out she married a woman, a report says.

PARAMUS, NJ — A former Paramus Catholic High School guidance counselor has filed a lawsuit against the school, its president, and the Archdiocese of Newark alleging she was fired because she married a woman.

Kate Drumgoole claims in the suit that her firing at the hands of the Archdiocese of Newark, the school, and its president, James P. Vail, was a violation of discrimination laws, NorthJersey.com reported, and was done to inflict emotional distress.

Paramus Catholic's lawyer, Christopher Westrick filed a motion claiming that the defendants did not violate New Jersey discrimination laws because, according to the report, employees are required to abide by the Roman Catholic Church's tenets.

In this case, Drumgoole allegedly violated the tenet forbidding employees to enter into same-sex marriages.

The school became aware of the marriage after Drumgoole's wife's sister sent a message to several Facebook pages, including the school's, that included photos of the couple's wedding.
