Parcells to Coach Saints?

Reports say suspended Sean Payton asked former Giants coach to fill in

New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton has asked former Jets and Giants coach Bill Parcells to coach in Payton's place while he serves a one-year suspension, ESPN reports.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced March 21 that Payton would miss the year after the league found that the Saints created a bounty program encouraging players to injure opponents.

Payton and Parcells plan to meet this week in Florida, Jay Glazer of Fox Sports said on Twitter.

Parcells turns 71 this August. He hasn't coached since 2006, after a four-year stay with the Dallas Cowboys.

Taking the Saints job may negate Parcells' eligibility for the Hall of Fame, since candidates must be retired five years.

Before Parcells entered the discussion, the Saints had considered replacing Payton with an in-house candidate, SB Nation reported.

An Englewood native, Parcells coached the New York Giants to two Super Bowl titles. He returned to the area in the late '90s with the New York Jets, with less success.
