PHS Boys Soccer Team Makes History

The week in review in sports

LOOKING BACK: The boys soccer team defeated Bergen Catholic 2-1 on Monday.

The win marked the first time PHS (6-2) has ever defeated the Crusaders. Max Brodarzon and Randy Casallas each scored a goal, and assisted the other’s goal.

Keeper Nick Cundari recorded 12 saves.

Girls Soccer

The girls soccer team defeated Old Tappan 4-2. The Golden Knights scored two late goals after PHS coach Glenn Hauge pulled his starters.

The Spartans defeated rival Ridgewood 3-2 in overtime on Tuesday. Sarah Cortes notched a hat trick to increase her team-leading goal total to 10.

Hauge felt the game was too close for comfort, as his squad had trouble finishing chances, and the Maroons were able to counterattack and score.

Girls Tennis

The girls tennis team defeated neighboring River Dell on Monday and in-town competitor Paramus Catholic on Wednesday to improve to 4-3 on the season.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Spartan football team faces a big test this weekend.

Paramus (2-0) is coming off of a bye week and heads to Montvale to take on perennial parochial powerhouse St. Joseph Regional (3-0), which has trounced three quality opponents so far this season, outscoring the competition 126-21.

Last year, the Spartans lost by one point to the Green Knights and it will be interesting to see how the new-look Spartan D handles the SJR offense, led by quarterback Spencer Aukamp and stud wide receiver Ricky Jeune (6-foot-3, 200 pounds).

The girls soccer team (5-0) squares off against Holy Angels at home at 2PM on Saturday.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: The boys soccer team as a whole deserves recognition for being a part of history by defeating the highly regarded Crusaders.

Casallas, a sophomore, continues to be a goal scoring threat for the Spartans. He also notched a goal against Teaneck.

For the girls, Cortes continues her dominant play and has 10 goals in just five games.
