9 Fall Ill from Chlorine Gas Leak at Parsippany Facility, Cops Say

Saturday morning incident a result of loose screw, police report.

A total of nine employees at a Parsippany manufacturing company fell ill when chlorine gas began to leak from a container recently, Parsippany police said.

On Saturday, Sept. 13 at 10:46 a.m. police responded to a report of a gas leak at Zimmer TMT on Pomeroy Road. Upon arrival, patrols were told by security personnel at the company that several employees were in need of medical attention inside the building, police said.

Officers began evacuating employees and administering oxygen to several victims while ambulances and emergency medical personnel were en route, police said.

A preliminary investigation showed a screw became loose on a 125-pound chlorine canister while an employee was working in the area, police said. Gas began to leak from the canister and affected nine employees, police said.

Parsippany Fire Districts 3, 5 and 6, EMS 1, Car 65 duty, Car 65 back-up, Car 66 duty, Car 66 back-up, Medic 501, Medic 502, Morris Minutemen and Boonton Kiwanis Volunteer Ambulance, Morris County EMS Task Force, Whippany Fire Department, Morris County OEM, Morris County HazMat Team all responded to the scene.

No charges have been pressed in the matter.
