Community Bands Together, Helps Family of Parsippany School Bus Aide Killed by Heart Attack

Neighbor starts fundraiser for family in jeopardy of losing home.

A Neighbor in Need.

That’s the name of the GoFundMe page that’s been started by Lake Hiawatha residents Sue and Jim Whelan, whose neighbor Maureen Hoffman died recently from a heart attack at age 54.

Hoffman moved to Lake Hiawatha 28 years ago, according to her obituary, and leaves behind a husband, Louis, and two sons. She died at her home on Feb. 3.

“The family believes Maureen’s death was brought on by the stress of juggling work and everyday chores, as well as the family’s finances,” a post on the GoFundMe page said. “Maureen was in charge of the bills and was trying to keep afloat financially but became overwhelmed as a result of the recent recession.”

As of Wednesday morning, the donation page had brought in $1,935 from 22 donors, and currently has a goal of $53,600.

Hoffman worked as a school bus aide for the Parsippany-Troy Hills School District.

“I ask only that you contribute whatever you can afford even if it’s just a few dollars,” the donation page reads. “We want to make sure that Lou and the boys can stay in their home and not have to go through the heartache of losing everything. They should be mourning their loss, not worrying about losing their home.”
