Condo Complex Catches Fire Overnight In Mount Tabor

More than 100 condo units were evacuated, but no injuries were reported.

MOUNT TABOR, NJ — More than 100 units were evacuated early Friday morning because of a condo-complex fire in Mount Tabor. No injuries were reported.

The Mount Tabor Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at 12:53 a.m. for a fire alarm at the Powder Hill Estates complex on Gates Court. Officials found a moderate smoke condition in the main-lobby floor, with a fire in a lower-level duplex unit.

The initial crew aggressively attacked the fire with watering cans and tools to keep the fire in the room of origin. Multiple teams ensured no considerable smoke got into adjacent units.

Officials left at 3:08 a.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

"This is a reminder to first responders and citizens alike that all fire alarms should be treated as structure fires until a thorough investigation has been performed," the fire department said. "It is easy to become complacent, especially with multi-family and commercial occupancy where alarms often activate due to cooking or malfunction."
