Mountain Lakes, NJ, May 8, 2026 — As the YMCA recognizes National Water Safety Month and promotes the national, “Phones Down, Eyes Up™” campaign, Lakeland Hills Family YMCA is encouraging families to prioritize swim lessons, active supervision, and water safety education as summer approaches.

Lakeland Hills is also proud to welcome its new Aquatics Director, Tommy Riggins Jr., as he leads the efforts to create a safe, supportive, and confidence-building environment for swimmers of all ages and skill levels.

“Water safety is about more than learning to swim,” said Riggins. “It’s about helping children and families build confidence, awareness, and the skills needed to stay safe in and around the water.”

At Lakeland Hills Family YMCA, swim lessons focus on foundational safety skills, including “Swim, Float, Swim” techniques, back floating, treading water, safe pool entry and exit techniques, and overall water confidence before progressing to stroke development.

“Active supervision saves lives,” said Riggins. “Even strong swimmers need attentive adults watching the water.”

Lakeland Hills Family YMCA remains committed to helping every swimmer feel prepared, capable, and safe while fostering a positive, fun learning environment for families throughout the community.

For more information about swim lessons and aquatics programming, please contact Lakeland Hills Family YMCA’s Aquatics Department.
