NJ District 11 2018 Congressional Primary Election Results

Democrat Mikie Sherill and Republican Jay Webber will go head-to-head in November in the race to succeed Rep. Frelingnhuysen.

NEW JERSEY — The primary results for New Jersey's 11th Congressional district are in: Current State Assemblyman Jay Webber will appear on the ballot as the Republican candidate, and Navy veteran and former federal prosecutor Mikie Sherrill will appear as the Democratic candidate, Politico projects.

This is the first time since 1992 that voters will not see Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen's name on the ballot, and just the second time since the mid-1980s voters will be picking a new Congressional representative. Ten candidates vied for their party's nomination in the race for New Jersey's 11th District, which covers most of Morris County and sections of Essex, Passaic, and Sussex counties.

"The results tonight are a clear indication that our community demands new leadership in Congress that will put people over partisan politics and bring change as led by the people of New Jersey. Tonight, we took a pivotal step to make sure we are ready for the tough fight ahead," Sherrill said in a statement.

Frelinghuysen, who was named the Chair of the House Committee on Appropriations in 2017, announced his surprise retirement from Congress in January 2018. He did not give specific reasons for his retirement, but thanked his family, friends, and constituents in a brief statement.

He had been facing a steeper-than-usual climb to reelection among vocal criticism that his voting record had become less moderate than it typically had been. According to the Cook Political Report, the election is a "toss-up" that leans only slightly Republican at this point. A Republican has represented the district since 1985.
