Par-Troy East 12-Year-Olds Defeat Rivals in All-Star Matchup
Par-Troy West offered some highlights, but the East's bats exploded in extra innings.
The Par-Troy East 12U All-Stars exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the eighth for a 14-6 extra-innings victory over their crosstown rivals from Par-Troy West.
In a back-and-forth game at Par-Troy West's Carroll Field, the teams were deadlocked at 5 after six innings.
Par-Troy East took the lead in the top of the seventh when Peter Giokas scored on a grounder by Daniel Metcalf. Par-Troy West answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game, but failed to capitalize on two chances to bring the home the game-winner with the bases loaded.
The East squad, feeling the momentum on its side after reliever Tommy Nowicki pitched out of a jam, went on to break the game open in the top of the eighth. Nowicki's two-run double broke the tie. Nigel Feliz followed with an RBI triple and Giokas made it 10-6 with an RBI double. Four more East players would cross the plate in the inning to send the score to 14-6.
Giokas and Nowicki pitched four innings each for the East, while Evan Chao was solid in four innings of relief for the West side, allowing his teammates to battle back from an early 3-0 deficit. The West would take a 4-3 lead in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Parker Close.
The win moved the East squad to 2-0 in the pool play portion of the District 1 tournament, while the West fell to 0-3. The top two teams from pool play will advance to an eight-team double-elimination tournament for the District 1 championship.
Par-Troy East's next game is Friday against Mendham at Delio Field in Parsippany at 6 p.m. The West next plays Sunday against Morris Plains at Carroll Field at 7 p.m.
