Parsippany Man Killed in Off-Road ATV Crash, Cops Say
26-year-old was conscious upon medical response, but succumbed to his injuries six hours later, police report.

Police are investigating the cause of an all terrain vehicle that is believe to have caused the death of a Parsippany man in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Sept. 3, Fairfield Police announced.
According to police, Joseph McDonough, 26, was with three other individuals riding ATVs on off-road trails that run parallel to Rt. 80 and through Big Piece swamp in Fairfield, police said.
An investigation has revealed McDonough, who was riding a Polaris ATV, drove up an embankment to avoid a drainage pipe that runs underneath the highway, police said. In doing so, police believe McDonough struck a tree root, causing him to lose balance and be thrown about 10 feet to the ground, and then was struck by the ATV, police said.

At the time of the crash, McDonough was conscious, police said. He was then transported by the group of riders to a nearby residence where police and emergency medical responders where notified. McDonough was taken to St. Josephās Medical Center in Paterson where he succumbed to his injuries at 2:14 a.m. on Sept. 3.
āThis is an unfortunate tragedy that will hopefully send a powerful message regarding the dangers of this activity. Our thoughts and prayers are with the McDonough family,ā said Deputy Chief Anthony Manna in a statement. āIllegal ATV operation throughout the Township has become an abundant problem. The department will continue with a zero tolerance policy and will take strong enforcement action against anyone who operates these dangerous machines in violation of state law or local ordinance.ā

The investigation is ongoing. No charges have been filed in the matter.
