Principal Punched In Face During Dismissal: Wharton Police

Police arrested one man in connection to the assault on a school principal.

WHARTON, NJ — A man assaulted a school principal in Wharton during dismissal last week, Wharton Police said.

On Feb. 21, a man drove away from a Wharton public school after assaulting the principal of MacKinnon Middle School, school officials said in a statement. The man allegedly punched the principal in the face as the principal monitored dismissal, the Daily Record reported.

The principal was taken to the hospital and treated for jaw pain; he was in school the next day, superintendent Christopher Herdman said.

Joseph Byron, 33, of Dover, was arrested the next day, and charged with one count of aggravated assault. According to the Daily Record, Byron did not know the principal. He was at the school picking up two children, with their mother's permission.
