Today's riddle: What did one strawberry say to the other strawberry? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. How will Paterson make up $7.4M in funding being kept by NJ? (northjersey.com) — Paterson is facing a $7.4 million hit after New Jersey moved to retain part of the city's 2025 transitional aid over missed sewer and construction fee hikes. State officials are now demanding full cost-covering sewer and construction rates by Sept. 30, or future aid could be at risk, potentially affecting local services and taxpayers.
2. Lawsuit says 3 uncovered New Jersey reservoirs left 800,000 drinking water customers at risk (thecooldown.com subscription) — Paterson residents are among roughly 800,000 North Jersey customers whose drinking water system is being targeted in a state and federal lawsuit over three long-uncovered reservoirs. Prosecutors say the Passaic Valley Water Commission's storage practices risk contamination from stormwater, animal waste, and pathogens, and they're seeking court-ordered fixes that could finally force major upgrades to local water infrastructure.
3. Paterson taps new leader to fight homelessness in NJ (gothamist.com) — Paterson has hired Angela Fields as its first chief homelessness officer to coordinate services for unhoused residents and strengthen local programs. Backed by opioid settlement funds and a $3.2 million federal grant for a new "homeless hub," she'll work with existing initiatives to connect people to housing, treatment, and support across the city.
4. Former Paterson Zoning Inspector Sentenced to Prison in Fraudulent Permit Scheme (tapinto.net) — A former Paterson zoning inspector has been sentenced to three years in state prison for taking payments to issue fraudulent zoning permits that residents believed were valid for home improvements. The scheme involved forged signatures on Paterson documents and has already led to probation sentences for two other defendants, while city officials have not detailed any permitting reforms.
