POINT PLEASANT BEACH, NJ — History lovers are invited to take a tour of the former U.S. Coast Guard Lifeboat Station in Point Pleasant Beach at an open house set for Aug. 8.
The open house is being hosted by the Point Pleasant Beach Historic Preservation Commission in partnership with Lifeboat Station 105.
The event is set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the station, 24 Inlet Drive and is free to the public.
People are invited to take guided tours of the station, which was built in 1936 and housed Coast Guard operations until the new station opened in 2017, according to the New Jersey State Library.
U.S. Coast Guard operations at Manasquan Inlet date back to the 1840s, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
The station at Manasquan Inlet was built because of its ocean access and protected mooring facilities. In approximately 1939, a boathouse was added in Point Pleasant Beach, and in 1976, an enlisted quarters.
It was decommissioned in 2018 and in 2023, Point Pleasant Beach purchased the property to preserve its history.
At the open house people are urged and welcome to bring historic Coast Guard-related photos to be digitally scanned and preserved as part of the station's permanent archive and record a "Digital Time Capsule" video.
Members of the Historic Preservation Commission and Lifeboat Station 105 will be on hand to meet and talk with about the long-term plans for the site.
"We hope you'll join us for this exciting first look at the future of one of our community's most treasured landmarks," the organizers said.
