Man Hit On Route 35 While Running From ICE Agents, Police Chief Says

POINT PLEASANT BEACH, NJ — A man running from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents was hit by a vehicle on Route 35 in Point Pleasant Beach on Friday morning, police said.

The man was hit at about 9:05 a.m. on Route 35 north near the NJ Transit train station platform, Police Chief Robert J. Kowalewski said.

Borough police responded to the call and learned the man had run into the road while ICE agents were trying to arrest him, Kowalewski said.

He did not identify the man.

An email to ICE officials seeking additional information about the man, including the reason he was being arrested, was not immediately answered.

The man suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at the scene, then taken to an unspecified hospital by Point Pleasant First Aid and Emergency Squad for further evaluation and treatment, Kowalewski said.

"The Point Pleasant Beach Police Department had no involvement in the ICE operation and was not notified of, nor aware of, any ICE enforcement activity occurring within the borough on this date," Kowalewski said. "The Police Department became aware of the situation only after officers were dispatched to investigate the motor vehicle crash."

He said the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office had been notified of the incident, and directed questions to the federal Department of Homeland Security.
